After a week where a potential positive outcome to negotiations was in sight, Mark Carney declared he had suspended negotiations due to last-minute modifications that were, according to him, “unfair, unprofitable, and called into question the reliability of any agreement.” Faced with the immediate imposition of 50% tariffs by the United States, Canada says it wants to retaliate “dollar for dollar.”

As a reminder, the new tariff crisis, triggered by the United States in July, comes following a long series of American and Canadian actions. The Americans, more specifically, the U.S. president, had kicked off his term at full throttle by declaring his willingness to subjugate Canada so that it would become the 51st state. This outcry, which brought the Liberal Party of Canada to power, led to a heated exchange between the two nations. One can think of Doug Ford’s advertisement, widely circulated in the United States, which derailed negotiations in late 2025.

The affected sectors are the automotive, aluminum, steel, and softwood lumber sectors. These sectors, dominated by multinationals, are the main pawns in these negotiations, with the Americans likely wanting to repatriate a good portion of processing and manufacturing, and with that, bring back Canada closer to the resource colony it once was. Smaller businesses in these fields are definitely the most prone to closure if no alternative is found. It will take major national projects and a radical change in the way we do things to hope to survive the troubled times on the horizon.

Uncertain economic impact

Will the Canadian economy, on life support for decades, survive this new setback? Nothing is less clear. An economy kept afloat by interventionist governments, companies that no longer innovate, a non-existent startup investment system, all metrics indicate a potentially very dark future for the Canadian economy. Major projects could potentially save the day on a technical level, certainly. But it is clear that the foundations would remain the same. It is undeniable that a major crisis is necessary in order to change entrepreneurial and governmental mindsets.

Perhaps we will see a new, dynamic, and strong Canadian economy emerge from the ashes of this crisis. Or perhaps Canada will return to it’s original form: a resource colony.

This new project, which has several facets, will film police interventions in Montreal, with no possibility for officers to start or stop the recording. The project is accompanied by measures to protect police officers against insults as well as the installation of automated license plate readers on police vehicles.

The Mayor of Montreal stated in a press briefing that cameras can protect citizens just as much as police officers. For his part, SPVM Director Fady Dagher states that: “The camera will allow us to have mutual respect on both sides.”

For now, there is very little information regarding the terms of the contract that will be awarded by the SPVM.

Note that the SPVM has a multi-million-dollar contract with the firm iMotion ROC Watch, an AI detection and investigation software. The combination of this software with police body cameras and mobile license plate readers could create serious privacy issues.

Having benefited from a quasi-monopoly during the tariff crisis, Quebec distilleries, which did not take advantage of the moment to innovate or improve their competitiveness, have no choice but to launch a media campaign and implore the people of Quebec to remain loyal to their products.

The executive director of the Union québécoise des microdistilleries, Paul Goulet, declared to the Journal de Montréal: “We fervently hope that those who had the opportunity to discover us in recent months will make the choice to adopt us forever. We’re crossing our fingers, while continuing to do everything possible to offer products of the highest quality.”

Meanwhile, the president of Distillerie des Marigots states that major American producers have considerable promotional and marketing resources that cannot compare to the means of smaller distilleries.

These statements reflect the Quebec—and more broadly, Canadian—mindset regarding competition. People prefer to complain rather than innovate. Small producers, busier fighting other small producers for their tiny market share, prefer internal competition over cooperation. Instead of aligning and helping one another to rival the largest alcohol producers, they prefer to fight for their small plot of land that belongs entirely to them.

It must be remembered that Quebec society is plagued by the “born for a small loaf of bread” mindset. Rather than betting on innovation, new technologies, social media, etc., small businesses prefer to complain to receive public money or sympathy rather than innovate.

This media outcry is yet another example of the Canadian entrepreneurial mindset. A mindset that will not survive the test of time, hopefully.

A now well-known sequence repeats itself in a country where the security situation is deteriorating day by day. Anarcho-tyranny, now firmly established in Canada, forces honest citizens to choose between the life of a victim or that of a criminal. The criminals, meanwhile, continue to operate without a single care in the world.

On the evening of August 15, 2026, in the rural municipality of Dufferin, Manitoba, four suspects triggered a security camera located on the property of a 66-year-old man. The suspects were then spotted by the owner transferring gasoline into one of the stolen vehicles used by the suspects to commit the offense.

The owner, armed with a firearm, then decided to defend his property and fired in the direction of the individuals. Three suspects remained on site awaiting the arrival of RCMP officers, while one suspect managed to flee with one of the vehicles they had brought to commit the offense.

Reactions from the political class were swift. Josh Guenter, a Conservative member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly, called for amendments to the Criminal Code to provide broader protections to property owners defending their property, referring to the “castle law” seen in certain American states.

For his part, Wab Kinew, Premier of the province, supported the charges against the property owner, stating that it was inconceivable for citizens to act as judge, jury, and executioner.

These reactions highlight the growing polarization in the country: while the most left-wing elements of our society campaign for an approach that criminalizes honest citizens and protects criminals, those on the right advocate for a return to “common sense.”

With the security situation deteriorating day by day in the country, it seems almost inevitable that we will see more and more similar situations. Would a doctrine similar to “castle law” be the solution? Perhaps. The fact remains that for now, citizens must choose between tolerating the intolerable or risking becoming a criminal.
